METAL OBSERVER (Online 3. August 2002)

english version

Power Metal from Yugoslavia, not your every-day experience! TORNADO is the band from Novi Sad, which I, like a few others before, had first found on mp3.com and who now has released its debut "Triumph Of The King" via Angular Records (eh, still pursuing your policy of categorically refusing co-operations with webzines?).
Three gentlemen share the vocal duty, the regular fronter Philip Zmaher, on one song Lyubo Maryanovich, and three more with Zoran Shandorov, but one thing they have in common, they all are damn good singers! But anyway…
Musically they do not present us the usual Happy Metal, but rather a mix of traditional Power Metal with a few slightly progressive influences, a symphonic element and a few acoustic interludes, all of them very catchy, but never shallow, with very gripping melodies, which you can't get out of your head anymore after the first listen already.
The opener "Coming Of The King", with a brilliant Lyubo Maryanovich, presents us a super-catchy piece of heavy, fast melodic Power Metal that starts out the album in great manner! Further highlights are the almost equally great "Fight To Win", which convinces by its grandiose melody, the fast "Black Swan Rider" and the equally fast "I Love Japan". Absolutely remarkable also is the "Heavy Metal Symphony", a 19+ minute instrumental, which for me personally is too long, very varied, but it loses momentum in the course of time.
Altogether a very good debut, which makes it clear that the band is together for a few years now and has lots of experience, so don't let the label "Power Metal" deter you, "Triumph Of The King" is absolutely worth it!

BREAK OUT magazine, Germany

Metaller, was willst du mehr?

BEHIND THE VEIL WEBZINE, Greece / Hellas - REVIEW (english)

This CD is surely among the best power metal releases of this year. The metal played by TORNADO has a character and it's very original. Their music is a mixture of American and German - European style power metal. Here RIOT, WARLORD meet RUNNING WILD and FALCONER meet MANOWAR without ever losing their originality. They are also influenced by RAINBOW's hard rock. And to all of the above add a progressive touch, just to make the whole result sound more interesting. The singer is among the best metal voices I' ve heard. So, it would be very good instead of buying a multi advertised power metal release that has nothing new to offer, to search and try to find this one. I'm sure it 'll haunt your CD player for a long time. Surely a must have album!

HEAVY METAL WARRIOR , USA - REVIEW (english)

This is the first Serbian band that I've ever heard. I know very little about this country and its history. I know the people of Serbia are often fighting for something, and they don't take any crap. These are warlike people, and power metal is right for them. I don't have a clue as to what the recent wars over there were about though. Tornado's Triumph of the King is so good, one ends up listening to it nonstop. I believe this might be some kind of a concept album. The insert has these great animated pictures, and one of them shows a 13th century king named Stephan Dushvan. At times, the album even sounds like Christian metal. The way the lyrics are, it could easily be interpreted that way. Whatever the case may be, this music conveys very powerful emotions of all kinds. The first and second tracks are fast power metal openers. I have a soundclip of "Coming of the King" in the New Release Section <Newreleases.html> Fight to Win has the magnificent chorus, "fatherland, fatherland..." Black Swan Rider has a bit of hard rock sound. Not a lot, but just a touch. But then again, the guitar playing and drumming are just too fast for hard rock. The Wall starts out with a bass solo, and some soft guitar playing. This is another song that is more rocklike. It is in that Axel Rudi Pell territory now. It also reminds me of some of the ballad like epics on the first Symphony X album. If you've heard their song the Accolade, you get the picture. Alone in the Dark has some really great organ/keyboard playing. I've said this before, "I like the timbre of an organ just as much as the timbre of a guitar." Whisper of the Past is a 3 minute acoustic instrumental. I like it a lot. The 20 minute instrumental Heavy Metal Symphony is an album highlight, and the band has a chance to show off their talent. In modern times, lengthy songs go back to the late 60s when psychedelic bands would go into long drug influenced jam sessions. It continued on into the early 70s with progressive rock bands like Yes. Today, one can still hear 15-20 minute songs in the underground. The bands in today's power and progressive scene, are today's versions of Uriah Heep, Jethro Tull, Steely Dan, Chicago, etc. The bands that knew how to play. If anything one could make this assumption simply because the underground bands are also intelligent. I know it seems like quite a vague notion to unite these two musical genres (from different eras) under that one commonality-but look around. Then think about it. Music didn't regress, it has progressed and will continue to do so. It's just a damn shame the rest of the world can't hear it. Back to the subject of long songs, some people don't like them. They want a good four minute "pick-me-up" then they are off to another. Sometimes I listen closely to these, other times I have it on and I'm not conscious of it. It can be good background music so to speak. 20 minute songs aren't appropriate for radio play, they are more for the thinking man that likes music. At this point in time, the last three tracks were all instrumentals. Now, we get to Triumph of the King. Words can't describe how uplifting and victorious it is. In conclusion, take a look at the artwork on this one. Is power/epic metal not the best genre of music that ever existed? The music, the album cover, the packaging, everything is top notch here. If you are a power metal fan that is short on cash, and you can only buy one album. Tornado is the one.

STRUTTER 'ZINE, Holland / The Netherlands - REVIEW (english)

Out of Yugoslavia/Serbia comes TORNADO, and after hearing their official European debut CD 'Triumph of the king' I can easily say they are one of the best Metal bands out of the Balkan. The CD has been released though the German Progressive Rock/Metal label ANGULAR RECORDS. The band has a very good melodic lead singer called Philip Zmaher and after listening to the first couple of songs you will agree with me that this is a high quality CD release. The band reminds me of AT VANCE and RAINBOW, but I also heard influences from the 80s US Power Metal style. Especially the first 6 songs are very impressive, with as highlights the uptempo melodic metal pieces "We must revenge" and "Blackswan rider" and the semi-melodic rockballad "The wall" (like WHITESNAKE meets RAINBOW). I also need to mention the 19-minute instrumental epic prog/power classical metal masterpiece "Heavy Metal Symphony: Eternal mystery + Epitaph", a song that sounds like a mixture between MAIDEN, MALMSTEEN and BACH. So, basically this is a recommended album to anyone into classic melodic metal. More info at: https://www.geocities.com/tornadohard

EMP Mailorder Magazine

PROGRESSIVE NEWSLETTER, Germany - REVIEW

METAL RULES, USA - REVIEW (english)

Still, power metal is an incestuous genre on its best days so with these bands it’s the strength of the songs that really count, and Tornado has some kick ass songs.

The disc starts off beautifully with 4 kickass tunes of war, “Coming of the King” and “Black Swan Rider” being the best. Each of the 4 has great melodies, vocals, and solos. There are some damn good songs on this disc, regardless of originality. Good stuff.
